Reduce carbon - Appliances

There are numerous changes you can make to your daily life style (ie fill your washing machine with a full load) that can have an immediate effect on the environment. Even small things like not having the television on standby helps reduce carbon and the footprint you leave on the planet every day of your life!

Electricity is one of the biggest producers of carbon emissions, so every time you make a coffee you are adding to global warming.

Here's a list of simple things you can do immediately, which will start to reduce your carbon contribution to global warming. Many items will cost you nothing and save you money:

APPLIANCES

  • TURN OFF
When not in use turn it off and save carbon and electricity bills. ie lights, television, DVD player, Hi Fi, computer, hair dryer and coffee pot,
Plugging items into a power strip, and turning off and unplugging the power strip when not in use makes life easy.
Review central heating and other timer settings to reduce energy consumption.
  • STANDBY
Turn off, switch off and unplug appliances not in use.
Electronic devices, even when not in use, use electricity just by being plugged in. ie unplug your mobile phone charger as soon as it has finished charging.
Standby means energy is being consumed.
  • BE EFFICIENT
There is no point in heating the house after you have left for work or when you are not at home.
Fill your dish washer and washing machine with a full load - this will save you water, and electricity.
Fill the kettle with only as much water as you need..
Insulate your water heater and hot tank.
  • MAKE LIFE EASY FOR APPLIANCES
Make sure appliances are in good working order and follow the service and maintenance instructions. Ie clean coils and defrost refrigerators regularly.
Position fridges in cool places and let hot food cool down before you put it in.
  • REPLACE
Replace old inefficient appliances with eco friendly appliances.
If your fridge / freezer is over 15 years old replace it with a new one with energy efficiency rating of "A".
Replace your old boiler with a new energy efficient condensing boiler. Use a tankless water heater.
Use energy-saving light bulbs, low energy bulbs fit into standard sockets and have a longer life and better energy efficiency. .
  • GREEN ENERGY
Sign up to a green energy supplier, who will supply electricity from renewable sources (e.g. wind and hydroelectric power) - this will reduce your carbon footprint contribution from electricity to zero.
  • The primary footprint measures the emissions of CO2 for which we are directly responsible like the burning of fossil fuels (oil and gas) for domestic energy and transportation.
  • The secondary footprint measures the emissions of CO2 for which we are ultimately responsible as in the whole lifecycle of products - from when they are manufactured to their ultimate breakdown.

Today it is more important than ever to minimise your footprint.

Electricity is one of the biggest producers of carbon emissions, so every time you make a coffee or turn on a light you are adding to global warming.

What is Global Warming?

The Earth as an ecosystem which globalization and man are helping to change for the worse. More carbon dioxide is now in the atmosphere and it stays in the atmosphere, acting like a warm blanket, holding in the heat which is why we call it 'global warming'.
We exist on this planet because its temperature is maintained, within a very tight tolerance, by the earth naturally trapping heat in the atmosphere.
